Top Ten House Alarm and Home Security Systems

Today, a house alarm, and if possible a managed home security system, is needed to make sure your home's security. Not only does installing a home security system improve the safety of your family and possessions, but it can also decrease your home insurance costs. The Top Ten House Alarm and Home Security Devices list highlights ten devices and features of home security systems that can make your house a safer place.
The Top Ten
10. Talking Devices help you to be aware of the status of your home and monitoring as well as program the system. The talking feature possibly will not result in enormous conversation, but it will assist you understand your system a slight better.
9. Some home alarm systems consist of extras like Key Fobs and Remotes to control the system at remoteness. Somewhat like to a car's key fob, home security key fobs include buttons to activate and deactivate the house alarm system. Some even include a "panic" button that activates the house alarm and alerts the right authorities in the event of an emergency. Remote controls are similar and frequently larger. The features of remotes differ greatly and can include a full key pad, a talking feature and a panic button as well.
8. Yard Signs and House or Window Decals publicize your home's protection. The Greenwich Study of Residential Security found that homes without alarms were 2.7 to 3.5 times more likely to be burglarized, and that the most effective prevention was the alarm monitoring company's yard sign (SIA Research Update, Security Industry Association, October 2001). Some choose to post the signs to prevent possible break-ins without actually installing a home alarm system. While this effort will lower the odds of an attempted burglary, a yard sign alone cannot completely protect your home.
7. A Back-Up Power Supply is important in maintaining home security even during a power outage, when the risk of break-ins and prowling is increased. Your home alarm should be effective even when your power is not. The easiest to keep up back-up power supplies use standard size batteries. Look for a model that uses rechargeable batteries to lower your maintenance costs.
6. Smoke Detectors add another layer of protection to your home, in particular when they are incorporated into the home alarm system. Not only do smoke detectors be a sign of a fire and give you time to escape safely, but when included in a home security package, they automatically alert the managing company and the fire department. Some systems even integrate the power supply to the smoke detectors. That means you don't have to change the batteries ever!
5. Wireless Systems protect your home with no adding extra cords to trip over or extensive installation of in-wall cords. In wireless house alarm systems, each sensor or keypad communicates with the master control panel via radio frequencies or existing wiring in your home. A burglar will never be able to disarm the system by snipping the wires. This ensures the system is fully integrated and monitoring all parts of your home without using up your outlets or creating an obstacle course of wires for you.
4. Extra Key Pads are also significant. Exterior mounted key pads can provide secure keyless entry to your family. Some systems also offer remote control key pads which are lightweight and moveable. A home alarm system that features a security code with a key pad increases the security of your home. A monitored system can also lock down door after several repeated, failed attempts at entry which indicate a possible break-in effort.
3. Key pads may not always be enough to keep burglars out. Sensors on Windows and Doors reduce the risk of a burglar entering undetected and are a key part of a home alarm system. Motion Detectors within the home also increase the level of security. The most sophisticated motion detectors include a feature to ignore pets' movement to avoid constantly setting the alarm off inadvertently.
2. Installation, Monitoring, and Repair Services increase not only the level of safety but the convenience of keeping your home safe. A house alarm alone cannot notify the police or fire department in the event of an emergency. The most complete systems include buttons to notify police departments, fire departments and medical help instantly. Another advantage offered by the best monitoring companies is live customer support and full service installation and repair of the system by employees who have been background checked, licensed and drug tested to ensure your safety. Finally, some companies even offer relocation services to keep you secure even when you move.
1. The classic Master Control Panel is very important to any home alarm system. The central hub of the system, the control panel is usually wall-mounted in an easily accessible place. The panel receives information from all other sensors and key pads, computes it, and transmits relevant information to the monitoring company. If you choose to arm the system from the panel when you leave the house, the master control panel also receives the disarm code when you return home. Some can even be disarmed by telephone!
Of course, this list is not complete, and the needs of every home and homeowner are diverse.

The first key component of any good DIY home security system is good locks on your doors and windows.
Secondly, you need to have a good rapport with neighbors and other people in the local area; let them know when you are going to be away and ask if they can keep an eye on your house. Finally you should consider adding a security camera system to your property. Whilst it would cost a lot to purchase one, you can actually make your own DIY home security camera.

For ease of installation, nothing is better than a wireless system. These can be slightly more costly, but they take far less time to install and will not leave unsightly wires around doors and windows. Many wireless systems are also controlled by remotes, meaning that they can be checked and turned on and off from bed. This is a huge convenience to many and the peace of mind is well worth the extra expense.
The bottom line with do-it-yourself home security systems is that you can spend as much or as little as you want based on what you determine you absolutely need to feel safe and comfortable in your home. If you live in an apartment or small home with only a few zones that need protection, it would be wise not to break the bank for a system with all the bells and whistles. Give a few hours to researching the alternatives available to you, talk to friends and neighbors who use home security systems, or seek the advice of a professional (many websites offer this service free of charge) before making any big investment.

What user said?
"We have had Wisdom Wireless Security System installed for over a year and it has worked fantastic. Set-up was not complicated and I have expanded the system to watch everything from a major break-in to an out of control raccoon. It has worked fantastic with no problems."
"Just installed Wisdom Wireless Security System myself (not much electronic know-how), had a little trouble with it, nothing major. The biggest thing was one of the magnetic door switches kept sending a "tamper" signal, I'm not sure how I fixed it, I just kept pushing different buttons in the installers menu, reset the main panel and it works great now! The directions weren't always black and white, but if you have patience and take your time you shouldn't have any problems! Now that everything works I love it! I purchased an additional magnetic door switch as well, and it synchronized with it just fine! Its a good system and you will love it when your all done, so grab a beer, your tools, and your patience and you wont be disappointed!"

SC100 - Skylink Wireless Home Security System

Skylink SC-100 Security System Deluxe Kit
If you're budget is within $100, SC100 - Skylink is a good choice.
"For the money SC100 - Skylink  is a good deal. The directions are well laid out and not too hard to read. Bought this for my sis in law's simple three bedroom rambler. The siren is just deafining. Set it off just to hear it and I swear I had some short term hearing loss!. I would advise getting the add on alarm and NOT putting the control panel by the front door though, or programming the backdoor sensors to go off immediately. In 30 seconds someone could walk to the control panel and smash it. My only gripe would be the motion sensor range isn't too great, seems like 20'."
"SC100 - Skylink  is Great system- easy to install and use. Total instal time for control panel, 5 doors sensors and 2 motion sensors- 2 hours. One feature which I would have liked to see is adjustable entry and exit delay times."

What people say about this system:
  • Visonic POWERMAX+ KIT2  system was so easy to install, works great. I don't have a home phone so i bought a magic jack and hooked it up to the alarm and works perfect. highly recommend this alarm
  • I never installed a security system before but I was able to follow the instructional dvd that was included with ease. Visonic POWERMAX+ KIT2  has been up and running for over a month now without a single problem. I did have to order some additional magnetic contacts for some of my doors but I was able to wire them into the transmitters with no problem at all.

  • I have a 1350sq foot one story home and I am so pleased with the Visonic POWERMAX+ KIT2  that I am ordering more accessories. The only thing that stopped me from giving the system 4 stars is the motion detector. It does not work consistently. I am not even going to include it with my system. I’ve read other reviews about how difficult it was to set up the system, but I’m not sure if those reviewers had the instructional DVD. The DVD shows you how to set up all the basics and all of the accessories that came with it were already pre-enrolled. The only thing I had to enroll was the smoke detector and that took about 2 minutes. I had the whole system up and running in about 30 minutes. It took about 45 minutes to place the sensors around my home. When I did a test I was very pleased. Once the alarm was activated, the system called my cell phone immediately. The alarm was also very loud and could be heard throughout the entire house.
One neat idea is to add a few cameras into the mix. This will allow you to take a peek at your property, when you are inside the home. It’s not just convenient for when you’re out of town, but also to see if there has been a delivery, when the kids get home from school, and any other day-to-day activities.
